RAIL TRANSPORT

What are the advantages and disadvantages of rail transport?
The most important advantage of rail transport is that it's cost-efficient. Railway transport is among the low-cost transport methods such as maritime transport. It is possible to dispatch large amounts of products to the land points where transportation by rail and sea is not possible. Another advantage of railway transport is that it is a form of transport that pollutes the environment at a minimum.

The most important disadvantage of rail transport is that it can only be used in areas with railway infrastructure. The transport costs are increasing due to high fuel consumption. In addition, the high-cost of infrastructure investments to ensure that rail transportation is possible is another disadvantage of railway transportation.

Advantages:
Cost-effective
A mode of transport that pollutes the environment at a minimum
Safe transportation of large amount of products

Disadvantages:
It can only be used in regions with railway infrastructure
Compliance with only medium and long distance transport
High investment cost

What is the role of rail transport in Turkey's exports?
Currently, the least used method of transportation in Turkey is rail transportation. Only 2% of the exports (in terms of value) carried out by Turkey are transported by rail. Although great importance was given to rail transportation in the early years of the republic, this interest decreased in later periods and more emphasis was placed on road transportation. Currently, the lack of railway infrastructure in Turkey at the desired level is seen as the most important reason why railway transport is not at the desired level.
